Keep It Clean

Updated: May 24, 2020

Keeping Minarets beautiful is a job that never stops. Trash is constantly being created and spread across campus by strong winds with trash flying to as far as the District Office. The overflowing trash cans can attract crows later in the evening and sometimes the crows pick up and spread the trash even further. Here are a few tips that will help not only our campus but also our local and world community.

Refuse

The most important step to remember is refuse. Stay away from one time use items that can’t be recycled. These items can include straws and lids on one time use cups. These items make our way into oceans and hurt our marine life. Keep in mind that most plastics are not recycled and end up in our oceans.

Reuse

The next most important step is to reuse items that still have life left in them. This can range from shopping at second hand stores to keep clothing out of the landfill … Purchase a reusable water bottle instead of a one time use plastic bottle. But, remember, do not reuse disposable plastic water bottles as it can leach chemicals into your body and bacteria can grow in them.

Reduce

The next step to remember is to reduce the number of disposable products you use. We are all creatures of habit and it can be hard to adopt new lifestyle changes. But, simple changes such as putting your sandwich in a reusable container instead of a plastic bag can make a big difference in the long run.

Recycle

Knowing what can be recycled can help you make the right decision for items you have chosen to use that you want to dispose of. You can help do your part by recycling which can reduce the harmful effects in our environment. Being aware of the items that can be recycled will help you educate others and help to keep batches of recyclables from being contaminated.

List of what can commonly be recycled:

Plastic bottles

Plastic containers

Cardboard boxes/Cardboard

Newspaper

Food containers/jars

List of what cannot be commonly recycled:

Plastic shopping bags

Plastic stretch wrap

Egg cartons

Drink containers

Food soiled containers

Soiled paper products

Broken glass

Fast food packaging

Plastic Utensils

Styrofoam

Minarets prides itself on doing our part to keep our beautiful campus clean and community clean. By respecting our resources and environment we show our mustang pride and set an example to inspire others to follow. Remember that humans are really great at making objects that last forever, so be mindful of what types of items you choose to use everyday.
