Minarets promotes professionalism in and outside the classroom. Part of this professionalism is to consistently think critically. True professionals are always wanting to go beyond the education they receive in the classroom. The Minarets Abroad program does just that. This program offers opportunities to travel to other countries and learn about different cultures and historical events.
This summer, Minarets Abroad will be taking eight students from all grades on the Holocaust in Europe Tour. They will be visiting Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Austria. Kaitlin Morgan, the faculty advisor of Minarets Abroad, says that this trip “has a serious note to it, so people know what to expect.” Senior Amanda Anderson is going on this trip because “it is a great opportunity to experience where history took place.” Part of the Holocaust tour will include going to Auschwitz, the most notorious death and concentration camp of the Nazi regime. However, the trip will not be entirely focused on the horrific details of the Holocaust. There are some excursions planned to expand the travelers’ minds in other ways. The students will be able to see history, not just read about it at school. Morgan believes that “seeing it in person is much more meaningful.” She can attest to how much more depth is added to one’s understanding of history when a person sees it in person.
In addition to expanding their minds, students will also have the opportunity to earn high school and college credit. The organization that Minarets partners with orchestrates this aspect of the trip. Students can earn 0.5 high school credit at no extra charge. College credit costs an additional $215 and will be granted through Southern New Hampshire University. Upon completion of the trip and the assigned project, students will have been granted 3 college credits.
Both Anderson and Morgan are excited for this trip. Anderson looks forward “to gain[ing] a wider perspective on the world and a better understanding of history by being in the place where it happened.” Morgan is excited for the students to “expand their horizons and learn new perspectives of the world.” This trip will be something for all of the travelers to remember for the rest of their lives.
