Community Day occurs on the last day of school before the start of Christmas Break and takes place in many of the school’s classrooms as well as parks, littered roadways, and the Boys and Girls Club in Oakhurst. It’s a way for the student’s at Minarets to give back to their community in a variety of shapes and forms.
For teacher Wendy Swanson’s Community Day project, she along with a small group of students worked hard to put together bags of clothes and lunches for the “home-free” citizens in their community. They also wrote them Christmas letters wishing them a happy holiday and letting them know how strong they think they’ve been under the circumstances they’ve had to face over the holiday season. The morning was spent organizing the many clothing donations provided to the project.
The second of the three tasks was writing the Christmas letters, which was a chance for the students to share with the homeless how strong and brave they really are. A quote written by Jimmy Stewart shares that, “The secret to a happy life is accept change gracefully”. Homeless people go through a lot of change to get back up on their feet, and having all of these supportive, aspiring, young teens helping the cause is one really amazing thing.
The last task was putting together the lunches and everyone lined up in a row to help out. Some people put together the sandwiches, some put fruit snacks and granola bars into brown paper bags, and others put oranges into bags.
Overall, this year’s community day in Swanson’s class was very exciting and all the students were very happy to be able to help out with the project and show support for those that might not be having the greatest Christmas this year.
