Minarets Derby Week 2019 is in the books! The Mustangs had another great year of wacky costumes, sparkling floats, and an exciting football game that resulted in a Minarets victory!
Under the direction of newly appointed leadership teacher Juan Ortiz, Minarets Leadership introduced a new cast of a dress up days, beginning with MultiMedia Monday, a day in which students came dressed up as any movie, tv, or video game character of their choosing. At lunch, students took part in a movie trivia game, competing against fellow classmates as well as staff.
On Teacher Tuesday, dozens of miniature teachers could be spotted running around the school, some sporting a Hawaiian shirt, others combat boots and khaki shorts. Little Moglias, Morgans, Kellys, and other staff impersonators all gathered at lunch for a staff-look-alike contest, showing off their outfits and posing for pictures. Ultimately, senior Colby Jobinger would take home first place for his accurate portrayal of history teacher Ben Regonini.
The next day, Minarets students launched into space (or into alternate universes) for Out-of-This-World Wednesday. Whether it was dressing up as stars and planets, aliens, or magical creatures, Minarets students had all the bases covered. The wide array of costumed students came together at lunch for a tug-o-war contest so large, it required a four-way rope.
Students then had to journey back in time for Time Travel Thursday. From 20s style flapper dresses to scrunchie-clad ponytails, different decades of color schemes and fashion could be seen around campus. For Thursday’s lunchtime activity, students participated in a “Dance Relay” in which each station along the relay required students to perform a popular dance from a different decade.
Last, but certainly not least, was Spirit Friday. Glittery tutus, purple and gold face paint, and football jerseys took the campus by storm. The annual Homecoming Rally did not fail to live up to the hype either. Its highlights included a musical performance by Percussion students, partner routines from Cheer and Football, and Minarets Abroad’s announcement for their 2021 trip: Italy and Greece!
The pinnacle of Derby Week, however, was the Homecoming Parade and Varsity Football’s exciting win! Rallying back in the fourth quarter and taking the game to overtime, Minarets defeated the Fowler Redcats, 35-28. During half time, the winners were announced for Mr. and Ms. Minarets. Here are the results:
Senior Mr. Minarets: Colby Jobinger
Senior Ms. Minarets: Kate Hough
Underclass Mr. Minarets: Phoenix Bedolla
Underclass Ms. Minarets: Claire Corippo
Celebrating the well-earned victory and the results of the Mr. and Ms. Minarets votes, students flocked to the gym after the game for a Friday-Night-Lights themed Homecoming dance.
Congratulations, Mustangs, on another great Derby Week!
