With the new school year already in motion, a whole new freshman class is being welcomed to Minarets.
As freshmen at Minarets High School, the class of 2025 is entering their first year of high school and, for a majority of them, their first classes at Minarets. They are being introduced to everything high school has to offer, with classes like Minarets C’s a class only for freshmen that's taught by teacher Katie Morgan. They are being taught what to expect in their next four years of high school and what they can receive by being a student at Minarets. For many of them, this is their first time taking any high school classes, although some who attended another school within the Chawanakee Unified School District had the opportunity to also attend an elective class while in eighth grade.
Freshman Laura DeSilva spoke about how her time at Minarets has begun, “All of the teachers so far have been very open and understanding and all of the upperclassmen have been helping me around as well.” So far, DeSilva is only involved in Key Club, but she plans on joining sports later in the year and as well as other clubs along the way. She also spoke about how Minarets compares to other schools she attended, “After coming from a small school to being completely online then coming to Minarets it has been a bit of a transition, and Minarets has been really understanding about that.”
Luckily, this year at Minarets is a bit more open as in-person learning is back. The school is happy about this achievement and hopes others are as well, because joining a new school, but only being able to do it over technology, is hard. Now, though, people are able to walk around wherever they please on school grounds, although masks still have to be worn inside for protection.
Another freshman, Taylor Bigelow, also spoke about how Minarets has welcomed her. “This school has welcomed me very well, I love all of my teachers, all of the students are really nice, and it's a very educated school.” So far, Bigelow says Minarets is better than other schools she has attended, and she plans to attend all four years of high school. She has become involved in FFA, FCA, and is also on the volleyball team.
Minarets teacher Katie Morgan, who teachers every freshman that attends Minarets, also spoke about how the freshmen are adjusting, “Overall it’s like a regular year for the freshman; we have the same struggles the freshman always have, their focus is a little shorter as the class period are longer than they're used to.”
While some freshmen have had some trouble staying focused, which is expected from coming off of being online, they seem to be excited as they adjust to being back to learning in person as well as enter their first year of high school at Minarets.
