Students Prepare for Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker

Updated: Sep 27, 2020

When Star Wars was first created in 1977 by George Walton Lucas Jr. Star Wars: A New Hope was the first movie of the franchise and an immediate hit that was loved and will always be loved by the general population.

Summary of the Star Wars Series:

Star Wars was originally a trilogy series that followed the characters Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamil), Leia Organa (played by Carrie Fisher), Darth Vader (played by David Prowse), Han Solo (played by Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (played by Peter Mayhew) and the lovable droid characters named C3PO (played by Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2 (played by Kenny Baker). There were to be 3 movies released within 3 years of each other that came out following this cast. The movies were A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. These movies soon became fan favorites and people continuously flanked the movies whenever a new one had come out.

Sixteen years after the Return of the Jedi was released, the creators of Star Wars created and released a prequel trilogy in 1999 that follows Anakin Skywalker (played by Hayden Christensen) and his journey of becoming the one and only Darth Vader, one of the most powerful and coolest villains of all time. The story also follows Obi-Wan Kenobi (played by Ewan Mcgregor), who was also the one who convince Luke Skywalker to study the ways of the force in the original series, and Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman), the mother of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa. The movies that came out with this trilogy were The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith. These movies were just as popular as the original trilogy.

Ten years after Revenge of the Sith came out in 2005, J.J Abrams created the third and most likely last trilogy in the Star Wars universe and it takes place 30 years after the Return of the Jedi. This new trilogy followed the story of Rei (Daisy Ridley), an orphan child that recently found out she has the force. The story also follows Finn (John Boyega), Kylo Ren/Ben Solo (Adam Driver), Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Poe Dameron (Oscar Issac), and Han Solo (Harrison Ford).

Now the newest trilogy isn’t like the others, it isn’t as good. But as Rise of Skywalker is supposed to be the last movie in the Skywalker related part of the universe, people are are a little unnerved and worried. Minarets Press took to the streets to see what the student body thought about the upcoming film:

Sophomore John Paul Uribe, a long time fan of the series, explained that he is excited about the movie because it took them two years to make and it's the last installation in the series. He did express concern that they might have rushed the ending.

Sophomore Bella Velasquez said that she will see if it’s good because she doesn’t want to put an opinion on something she hasn’t seen yet. She wants to keep an open mind even though the last ones weren’t the best.

Her sister, sophomore Kayla Velasquez, said ”I've been a fan of the series since around 2010. I think it’s gonna be a good close to the franchise. I don’t normally give my opinion about Star Wars movies until I see them because unexpected things could happen during it. I try to research the best I can about it to the general assumption about it, and to see if it’s gonna take a different approach with the series or if it’s gonna start something new.”

On the other hand, sophomore Cecilia Pierce said that she hasn’t seen any of the Star Wars movies and doesn’t understand the hype for it.

I, Eve Romano, personally really enjoy the Star Wars series because my mother had watched it with her dad when she was growing up and now her and I watch them together. I am always excited about movies and don’t judge them until I watch them, but going into this movie I am nervous; I think they might have rushed it because it’s supposed to be the last film focused on this storyline.
