COVID-19 has affected people in more ways than we can fathom. School has moved online, events have been cancelled, everyone is sheltering in place, and more. For all of us, we are living through a historical time period so we decided to get some student perspectives and experiences:
Sophomore Lauren Ericson: "Due to the recent Covid-19 outbreak, daily life has been very strange. Because of the risk of contracting the virus, schools and most businesses have closed. This series of closures are affecting everyone in the community. I can definitely say that it has also had an effect on me personally as well. Because of the shelter in place order put in effect by the Governor of California, I have been cooped up with my family for three weeks. To my surprise, it actually hasn’t been that bad. It is somewhat frustrating because I really haven’t interacted with anyone else besides my family though. This definitely has my family a little antsy and anxious. However, I’m trying to keep on the bright side of things and look at it as an opportunity to bond and become closer with my family than ever before due to all the extra time we have been spending together. I know this is a new, scary time but we can get through it together! Just focus on the fact that you get the opportunity to spend more time with your loved ones. We all just need to remain calm and continue following all the precautions. The most important thing is to take this seriously and make sure you are doing your part by staying inside and limiting your contact with other people as much as possible. Stay strong, we are all in this together!"
Junior Jeremiah Stott:“It’s been hard not being able to see my friends, my teachers, and some of my family, but I know in the long run quarantine is what’s best for everybody right now.”
Sophomore Luke Ericson: "The COVID-19 Virus has had a serious impact on me and my family. For example, both my parents have started working from home. I’ll admit that I have been going a little crazy being all cooped up, There are many young kids in my Neighborhood, the virus hasn’t stopped them from playing around outside which is in a way concerning because they need to be careful, but it is also nice to see that they are still having fun in this time of fear and panic. I’ve been trying to adjust to the new online classes but it’s been kinda difficult but I do think I’m getting the hang of it. "
Junior Priya Cheema: “I’ve had to focus a lot more on school while I’m home but it’s been a nice break from school overall. I do miss my friends though.” Overall, some people are doing just fine, others not so much.
Junior Britteny Robertson: "I’ve never seen grocery stores and malls this empty. This experience is definitely something that caught my eye. I realize how dangerous this is. This is very impactful to families and people that have jobs and students that are doing their school work from home. The students don't get the opportunity to become face to face learners and for the seniors they are missing out on a lot. Some people lost their jobs because of closure and some small businesses will soon shut down because of the closure. The smaller businesses have a harder time because it's hard for them to get back on their feet again. They have improved on take-outs and so instead of shutting everything down there are things that are limited but can still get the job done which is trying to keep businesses running. We all have to keep a clear mind and think that for all this closure and being in quarantine we are saving more lives being at home. I hope that all of you take this seriously and help others by staying home, we could all work together and be one big team. Stay safe everyone!"
