If you haven’t already heard or seen the flyers posted around classrooms and hallways, Minarets students are thrilled about senior Beth Morgan’s SLE (senior legacy experience) this year! Her project entails the installation of two motion-sensored, filtered, refrigerated water bottle refill stations for our campus.
I spoke to Beth personally to gain insight and discuss her motivation for this original idea. Beth explained that most students at Minarets typically don’t want to drink from school drinking fountains, and the cost of water bottles can sometimes deter kids from drinking water during the school day altogether. She is confident that the installment of water bottle refill stations would not only encourage healthy habits amongst Minarets staff and students, but reduce the amount of plastic trash going into landfills as well. Through the collection of recycling from nearby schools, businesses, events, as well as the help of donations, Beth hopes to accomplish her goal of $3000 by February 19th, which would cover the cost of the two stations. She has also reached out to the local Rotary and Kiwanis clubs for support.
Overall, water bottle refill stations would make a positive change for the health of our students and for the environment. Don't forget to throw your recycling into the blue bins placed in every classroom on campus to make these water bottle refill stations a reality!
