What is Minarets University?

Minarets University is an elective course available to all sophomores, juniors, and seniors at Minarets High School. Minarets U courses are available at any of the following State Center Community College District (SCCCD) campuses: Fresno City College, Reedley College, Clovis Community College, Madera Community, or Oakhurst College. Courses are taken in two formats, 100% online, or in person at an SCCCD campus. Students who sign up for the class are scheduled a class period to devote study time during their school day to spend time on their college course. Sophomores are limited to signing up for one college course while upperclassmen have the opportunity to take two Minarets U classes. Many MHS students are taking advantage of this successful program.

When signing up for classes, you must visit one of the SCCCD college campuses and meet with one of their academic counselors, preferably at the college you intend to take your course. You will need to bring the high school enrichment packet filled out, which requires signatures from your high school counselor and principal. You will also need your most recent high school transcripts along with a letter of recommendation from the high school counselor, principal, and your parent or guardian. After the counselor approves your high school enrichment packet, they will discuss classes that are available for you to take. Once you choose your class the counselor will register you for the course.

This program expands the student’s knowledge by providing a college-level experience. Students taking this course say that the experience was well worth the hard work. It allows them the opportunity to try new things and decide what they want to do with their future. It gives them a taste of college-level academics. “Not only is it wonderful for college classes, but it can be used as a study hall,” stated Minarets student, Jacob Garaffa. Furthermore, it benefits high school students by giving them a head start in completing their general education college units.

If Minarets U sounds like it may be a program for you, contact counselor Claudia VanDenBurgh, she has all the paperwork and information needed to enroll.
