Appreciating Students with Quarter 1 Exemplars

Updated: Jul 12, 2021

Minarets recently announced this year’s Quarter 1 Exemplars, a tradition that has been continued even during the circumstances of the pandemic. Several students from each grade level were selected by their teachers based on their work, attitude, and how they help build up others. Though students never know the exact reasoning behind why they were chosen, junior Marshall Newton explained, “I think that I was chosen for a Quarter 1 Exemplar for two reasons. The first is that I've been on top of my work, putting in plenty of effort, which was reflected in my first quarter grades. The second reason I think is that in class I am always answering questions, engaging with the teacher, and trying to get other classmates to engage too.”

Because of the challenges of quarantine, WebEx learning, and the mental health afflictions that come with it all, it has become increasingly important for students to find joy in their work to make it easier. Freshman Jayla Johnson said, “...these times are hard and it becomes difficult to think positively sometimes, but I believe that everyone is capable of it if you really put your mind to it.”

Recognizing these Exemplars has become more important than ever, especially during a time where students are inclined to feel alone and unappreciated for what they do. Identifying these students for what they do helps them to feel accomplished and encourages them to continue forward. Senior Cara Coombs said, “I think it is important to recognize the Exemplars because getting recognition for the work you have done is really nice.”

Recognition of the Exemplars also gives other students at Minarets some examples of reliable classmates they can go to for support. Sophomore Mikala Tarazi said, “They’re important because there might be other students that need a good example or people to talk to.” Trustworthy peers are often a strong source of motivation, both in academics and in personal matters. “A tip that I have for students is that it is ok to fail because you learn from those failures and they can make you a better person,” said Johnson. “Never think you have to be perfect because nobody is.”

These Exemplars are just a select few of the many students at Minarets who “go big, go pro, and go now,” and as the new semester begins, the best strategy is to look to any students or teachers you admire for advice and ideas. Junior Jolene Anderson said, “You know yourself best. Do what works for you to achieve your goals.” No matter what, Minarets, just do the best you can.
