Varsity Girls Basketball is off to a great start this year, going 7-0 through their first seven games. Led by coach Jay Smoljan, the team has outscored its opponents by over 100 points combined and has won 3 of their games by over 20 points. Most recently they pulled out an impressive win over Matilda Torres Highschool 49-19 on December 10th. This season has been impressive for a number of reasons, primarily because the girls’ team has historically not been very good, with the 2019-2020 team going 1-22, and the 2018-2019 team going 4-20, this team is clearly different.
So what is the reason for the Mustangs’ success? The main factor would have to be guard Melia Kamalani. Kamalani has scored more than 20 points in every game this season and scored 41 points with 8 assists and 13 Rebounds in the Mustangs’ win against McClane. She’s a great player. But it isn’t just Melia, players such as Esther Martinez and Kylie Howard have taken big steps forward in their game and are contributing to the team in a big way with rebounds and defense.
The girls’ biggest challenge so far this season comes today as the play Fowler, a division rival that has started 9-0 this season. A fellow undefeated team, we’ll see how the Mustangs stack up in their first division game against a very good team.
This girls team has a lot of ambition and a lot of talent, it will be great to see how much they can accomplish this season.
