With these unusual times, school sports are slowly making a comeback, including girl's soccer. The team has just begun practicing and preparing for their 2020-2021 season and has also welcomed their new coach, Mary Pearson.

Pearson is optimistic about the upcoming season. She explained, “This season will be interesting for sure with the delayed start, but we will be ready to play in the spring. We have a solid group of girls returning. I'm excited to see what they will do on the field together.”

Senior Alice Cummings is a returning soccer player who has been on the varsity team for the past four years. Cummings shared some concerns about the realities of what this season will bring, “I think that this upcoming soccer season is going to be interesting. Transportation is going to be difficult if we have to be socially distanced so I’m definitely not excited about that.” She did explain, however, how last year’s senior players profoundly impacted the team and gave them the confidence they needed. “We had a lot of injuries throughout the year,” said Cummings, “but we finished strong, and it was good for us.”

For those interested in joining the girls' soccer team, contact Mary Pearson at mpearson@mychawanakee.org. The team practices once a week until December, being their "summer" practice time. According to league rules, the soccer season technically begins Feb. 2 for conditioning and Feb. 17 for official practice. The first game is on March 9 vs. Sierra High School.

This year may be a challenge, but the girl's soccer team continues to stay strong and represent Minarets!
