How Minarets Students Celebrate the Holidays

As the calendar flips from November to December, the holiday lights start to shine, and the smell of peppermint is in the air, and that’s when you know it’s the start of the holiday season! But, of course, everyone celebrates differently.

The holidays are usually celebrated with your family and friends around you and many students said their favorite part during Christmas is spending time with family and friends. “I really like having dinner with my family, it’s always fun and I love my family," said senior Holly Furgerson.

For some, there are fun family traditions, like the Christmas Pickle. Senior Hana Unruh explained, "So we have this pickle ornament that we hide on the tree each year and on Christmas day whoever finds it first gets to play "Santa" by handing everyone their gifts." But in senior Holly Furgerson's family, they "hide an ornament pickle in the Christmas tree and we basically hide it and whoever finds it gets an extra present."

Food is one of the biggest holiday traditions during this time. Junior Austin Warren explained that his family uses gelt, chocolate coins covered in gold and silver coins, while playing dreidel. Freshman Jae Jacobs, other the hand, proudly declared that making gingerbread houses was their favorite tradition and food. While different cultures create different types of food, there are some common favorites, including candy canes, hot chocolate, and eggnog.

Of course, decorating is one of the best parts of the holidays. Some student have a fake tree that they use every year, and some people get a real tree. Junior Autumn Pearson explained that her favorite family tradition is "going to get our Christmas tree from the boy scouts in North Fork." Other students have special traditions about decorating, like sophomore Maddy Phillips' 'Secret Elves Night' where she and her sister clean and decorate the house on Nov. 30.

Regardless of how we celebrate, this time of year is filled with traditions. It may be different this year, but be sure to appreciate your friends and family, and to take time to do something you love.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
