In a nail-biting game, the Minarets football team showed their long-term “unbeatable” competitor Caruthers who’s boss

Updated: Oct 7

Since what seems like the beginning of time, Caruthers High has beaten Minarets High in the bustling sport of football. The Mustangs, however, decided to leap to the future, forget about the past, and win against the Blue Raiders. Both the JV and varsity Mustangs teams made history that day, the purple rain drowning the other school.

The energetic JV Mustangs won with a score of 7-0, and head JV coach, Chandler Lucas, says that their motivation to play and win was touching to him: “...And, they were inspired actually. They did it on the day that I lost my grandmother. These boys took all that emotion and they ran with it [and] I’m so emotional right now because of it.” The connection between coach and player is what makes Minarets different from other schools.

The varsity game was nothing to scoff at, though. In fact, if one was only listening to the fans in the stands, there wouldn’t be a hint of who was winning. This game had everyone on the edge of their metal seats. However, there could only be one victor, and the Mustangs took it with a score of 45-42. When asked about the win, head varsity coach, Shannon Pulliam, said, “...I always tell the kids, ‘There can only be one first.’ No one can ever take that away from them. Last year was the first winning season we’ve ever had. No one can take that away. That was the first win against Caruthers. This team can always hang their head on that and say, ‘We were the first [Minarets] team to ever beat Caruthers.’ That’s always a great feeling to say, ‘There’s only one first, and we got it.’ So, I’m really proud of them.”

What was the driving force behind the varsity win? It seems like it was pure grit. Coach Pulliam says, “No, I don’t think we played well. We did enough to win the ball game. I think we made some good plays here and there. But I think Caruthers came out and they [Minarets] were determined to not lose this game. They were going to do everything they could to win the football game.” If the fiendish Blue Raiders were drowned in the purple rain while the Mustangs weren’t at their best, then all the other teams should check the weather forecast and be wary of a storm.
