Under new coaching, the Minarets Varsity Baseball team has remained undefeated in the league. Coach Michael Garza assisted Coach Jesse last year and took over the team for this year’s season. Coming into the season, he knew what to expect from the boys, and knew what needed to be fixed.
The teams’ strengths quickly overcame the weaknesses; Garza says, “I felt as once we got to the first fowler game and we played I knew we were gonna be okay, I saw what the team has in them and since April 1 we just haven't lost, I knew I could take them above and beyond."
While Garza continues to coach the boys in baseball he also wants to prepare his seniors for life.
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, so don’t be afraid to push yourself harder; it's okay to fail," says Garza.
As for his seniors, he wishes them the best of luck after high school and wants to thank them for a great season.
In his first year of coaching, he had two players make it to the best hitter in the league, Trever Jobinger and Mikey Hershberger, playing a league-wide city/all-star game.
When talking to senior Trever Jobinger, he states that coach Garza has pushed him to be his best self on and off the field and is very grateful for all he has done this season. Jobinger exclaims that being a part of a winning team is exhilarating. He plans to continue playing baseball after high school.
Underclassmen varsity baseball player Mason Medina says he feels proud to be on the team both years they’ve gone undefeated.
"I'm excited personally about just getting better, and helping my team out even more in all aspects of the game," says Medina.
The baseball team has loads of potential in the upcoming years with this year's freshmen and sophomores stepping up to varsity. Garza’s coaching style brings a sense of uniqueness to the team and will hopefully lead them to another undefeated season next year.
