Both the global pandemic and the recent local wildfires have created challenges for this year’s competitive cheer team. Despite these challenges, the program is back on schedule, and in-person practices have been taking place for several months now.
Sophomore Lilly Alsup is a first-year cheerleader this season and says that COVID-19 has had an effect on practices; cheerleaders are required to wear masks which makes it more difficult to perform stunts. Overall though, she is glad the school can make practices work since this in-person interaction makes it much easier for everyone to learn routines and dances now that they are all together.
Prior to the in-person practices, the team was practicing cheers, dances, and stunts online, which sophomore Keara Mellon said was challenging. Like Alsup, Mellon is glad to have in-person practices since "we have a lot of newer girls this year so being able to be there and actually help them has been fun”.
Overall, the school is honored to have such a fine group of ladies cheering on the Mustangs this year and, like the team, students, staff, and parents are eager to see them cheer at games and attend competitions again.
