On Tuesday, January 14th, The Minarets Girls Basketball Team traveled to Fowler for the second game of league play this season. Last week, Minarets faced off against Avenal for their first game of league play at home, coming out victorious with a score of 40-28.
After a 40 minute bus ride south into Fowler, the girls were ready and eager to play. The Redcats had four players out that night including their star player, Alexis Alverado, who recently broke the school record with 1000 points. The game started off hot with Minarets going on a 12-2 run, but that didn’t last long because the Redcats adjusted quickly and took a two point lead going into halftime. The Lady Mustangs quickly turned it up and took a lead going into the fourth quarter after a dominant third quarter. Up to this point Kinzie Turner had four 3-pointers for a total of 12 points. In the fourth quarter Savannah Garabedian had been grabbing clutch rebound after clutch rebound to secure possession after possession for the Mustangs so they could take some time off the clock. Addy Neilsen also playing with great aggression while forcing a jump ball to give the Mustangs the ball back.

The crowd became very alive with the last minute going back and forth one point at a time. Addy Nielsen called the game, hitting two game sealing free throws to put The Mustangs up by three with ten seconds left. The Redcats matched down the court and drew a three point foul with four seconds left. The shooter missed all three of her free throws. On the third shot the Redcats got the ball back and heaved it up, just to come up short. The Mustangs came out on top winning this one 44-41 moving on to 2-0 in league play.
After the game I was able to speak with Amie Matteson which she stated the key was that they “Finished all the way through”. She also stated “The last 5 minutes were intense” which definitely checked out.
The Mustangs now on to face the 13-6 Sierra Chieftain Girls in Tollhouse on Friday, January 17th. Do the Lady Mustangs remain on a hot streak or did the Chieftains get the best of them? Stay tuned to read about their next game.
