Boys Basketball traveled up to Mariposa for their fifth game of the year against the Grizzlies. While off to a slow start, the Boys Basketball record was 2-2 going into Mariposa- and sadly they came home in defeat. The score recap was 69 - 49, a hard loss for Minarets due to the fact that- during pre season- our Mustangs laid down fundamental basketball, out scoring and initiating better defense than the Grizzlies. Mistakes were made, with the boys underestimating Mariposa.
Coming into the second quarter, down by 8, the Mustangs had a wake up call, making the score even. Buckets were being made one after the other, back and forth, until halftime came, leaving with a score of 30-28. Mariposa was in the lead, but only by 2.Both teams came out of halftime with different playing styles. Varsity captain Eli Estrada explained, “We came out and didn't play basketball as a team. It was really just everybody working alone and no communication was inputted to fix the hole we were in.” Mariposa put up 19 more points while Minarets only put up eight. Going into the 4th quarter, Mariposa was up, but the lead started to decrease as communication was made and the Mustangs started to play as a team, scoring 19 points.
Basketball isn’t a one sided game; there’s a defense aspect and Minarets let Mariposa put up 19 more points too. Thus, the game ended at 69 - 49, leaving Minarets with a 2-3 record. Varsity Shooting Guard and junior Anthony Hernandez said, “It sucks to have a lost like this because it really shows how much talent a team could have, but it doesn't mean anything if they cant work that talent together”.
