At Minarets, we don’t settle for a simple back-to-school night. Instead, we have Fall Showcase, which is an opportunity for teachers and students to show off their projects and skills to parents.
In room 605, IT teacher David Elm watched over his students coding and testing their
programs. He stated, “We are showing the games we developed to the parents coming through”. Elm continued, “I think it’s nice to have the parents ask questions and have students show what they’re doing.”
Parents of the students definitely agreed. One observing mother said, “It’s awesome. It gives an opportunity to see what your kids are doing, and what they’re doing is really cool.”
Freshman, Nick Stivers, demonstrated his game, based on the classic arcade game Space Destroyer. Enemies swarm the player-controlled spaceship, which fires out lasers to fend them off. Creating even a simple game like this is no small feat, requiring many lines of code and hours of effort.
Despite the great amount of time and effort required to create a game, every student in the classroom had a playable game open on their screen to show off. This demonstrates the exemplary learning that is going on in the class, and the school at large.
