The “Slick Rocks” finally have been delivered to all the student winners from the Slickrock Film Festival last spring, waiting almost half a year to see their prizes. After having one of its best years yet, the Media program walked away with four awards total, one of which was Best of Show, the highest award the festival has to offer.
"My team and I were fortunate enough to win Best of Show, which I don’t think Minarets has done in almost five or six years.” said Johanna Ziegler, a Minarets senior and the director of the music video ‘Stupid Deep.’ “I’ve been hoping to win a Slickrock since I entered high school, but I never could have dreamed of winning Best of Show. It’s one thing to say you’ve won a category. It’s another thing to say your little film won the whole entire thing.”
Minarets was also able to secure first place in three other categories; General PSA, Cover music video (which was also for “Stupid Deep”), and Suicide Prevention PSA.
As for future Slickrock competitions, how can Minarets go up from here after such a successful year? In spite of anticipated technical limitations for this year’s festival due to COVID-19, most of the dedicated media students are confident in the program’s ability to be competitive in all sorts of categories, such as short films and product commercials.
