Minarets High School is home to a very diverse community when it comes to career opportunities. From arts to smarts, there is sure to be a class for any kind of person. With many options to choose from, there will always be questions of, “which one should I do?", or “what would be the best class for me?” Those are exactly the questions that this article plans to help solve. Welcome to “Would You Rather…”, a series that will take two specific paths and take a deep dive look into the kinds of classes, or activities, they are. This article, in particular, will be asking the question “Would you rather deal with words or numbers?" However, what does it mean to deal with words or numbers?
Let's start with words. Do you like reading books? Do you have a sense of excitement when you create your own stories or essays? Then you must certainly love English language arts (ELA). ELA is one of the required classes that you must take in order to graduate from any high school. Minarets is home to many unique ELA teachers who offer the standard language arts 1-3 classes, and also Honors and AP. While in an ELA class, students are expected to read stories, write essays, learn a variety of literary devices, and much more.
Sophomore Devyn Nicholls, says, “I prefer ELA because it involves more writing and talking, which is something everyone does normally on a daily basis.”
The next path we will be looking at is dealing with numbers. Do you enjoy solving equations? Do you like the thrill of using a calculator? Then you should check out math. Math is another class that is required to be taken if you want to graduate high school. Minarets is home to a wide variety of math teachers and classes. We have the basic Math 1-3 and AP, but we also have calculus, statistics, and economics. While in a math class, students are expected to learn equations, solve math problems, memorize formulas, and much more.
Sophomore Nathan Crotty, states, “I like math because it helps build cognitive thinking.”
So which class is more popular with the Minarets population, ELA or math? After letting students vote on the official Minarets Press Instagram page, the results are in: It seems that ELA has triumphed this time. However, despite what the polls say, both classes are amazing and have a special place at the school.
