One and Done: Apply to NHS

Updated: May 21, 2020

The National Honor Society, more commonly known as NHS, is currently accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year. The National Honor Society only requires one application for a lifetime membership. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are encouraged to apply. Strong candidates have not only good grades but are strong in leadership and service areas and display this in their applications. Complete applications will be due September 28th in the office. Once the due date passes, the applications will be reviewed by a rotating panel of five Minarets teachers, excluding the NHS advisor Kaitlin Morgan and school administration, as stipulated by the National Honor Society Council.

Current NHS president and senior Crystal Hernandez hopes to better promote the goals and ideals of the Minarets chapter because she believes that not many people apply because they do not know what the club is and how it can benefit one’s college résumé. Adviser Morgan agrees with the Hernandez when she says “I think a lot of times people get hung up on academics.” Being a member of the National Honor Society looks great on an application as it shows colleges that the applicant has good grades, leadership qualities, and is involved in community service. Part of Hernandez’s plan to increase the number of applicants includes amping up the promotion of NHS and clearly stating the benefits being a member of this club such as having a fuller college application.

Upon acceptance, new members have the option of paying a suggested one time membership fee. Meetings will be held on every odd Mondays. Text reminders will be sent out the day before and day of the meeting. Members are also considered to have lettered in NHS meaning that they can receive a patch for a letterman jacket or letterman sweater. Seniors will also receive recognition at graduation.

Sophomore Corinn Nielsen is planning to apply to the National Honor Society. She heard of this club through her Minarets C’s class last year which was taught by Kaitlin Morgan, the advisor of NHS. This is only a small part of the new promotion initiative that President Hernandez plans to pursue.

Remember, there is only one application for lifetime membership for the National Honor Society. As President Crystal Hernandez urges “Just do it. Just apply. There are no disadvantages of applying.”
