It’s Relay for Life season and this year Minarets High School has been given the great honor of holding the Sierra Mountain Communities Relay on its very own, brand new track field. Relay for life is a community-based fundraising program which donates all its proceeds to cancer fighting associations.
There are a variety of ways that individuals can get involved, whether it starting a team, donating their services, walking the track, and more. The Minarets California Scholastic Federation (CSF) has started its own team and has brought back a donation trick that the National Honor Society used two years ago.
Two years ago, Minarets NHS played an unpopular song on repeat as the bell and set a fundraising goal, which was donated to Valley Children's Hospital.
Now, CSF decided to use the same strategy, but this time for Relay for Life. After much deliberation between songs, the vast majority of members voted for Baby Shark, a music sensation that is hitting the United States by storm; practically everyone has heard it! Minarets CSF Relay for Life Team hopes to raise $500 before March 29. All proceeds will go towards the American Cancer Society.
Baby Shark has been playing throughout the hallways over the last week and a half and so far Minarets has raised over $200. Of course, students, teachers, and visitors are growing tired of the repetitive nature of Baby Shark. Yet the point is not to torture, but to play a fun, popular, little tune in hopes of reminding our campus that cancer affects almost everyone. By raising awareness and money, we are fighting alongside the American Cancer Society to diminish the power of cancer.
Donations can be made in the Office and the Media Lounge. Club representatives will also be going around to pro periods throughout the week to collect donations.
Remember, if every person at Minarets donated 75¢, the music will stop and the American Cancer Society will have $500 more to fight against cancer.
