Decades ago, before social media or television existed, radio plays were a popular form of entertainment and the Minarets Drama will be performing its very first radio play, It's a Wonderful Life, on Dec 18-19.

A radio play is an entirely acoustic performance with no visuals, actors using only their voices to create their characters. But with the help of music and sound effects, the story is brought to life. Radio plays were mainly popular in the 1930s and 40s, and in some cases, the plays were so convincing, listeners thought they were real!

Last year, the Drama Department performed its first ever virtual play, She Kills Monsters. The play was a huge success with the hard work and commitment of everyone involved, but it came at the cost of many technical and logistical difficulties. That’s why drama teacher and director Kayla West decided to put on a radio play this fall, which would eliminate the hassle of cameras, costumes, and green screens.

West explained the production of the radio play, saying, “We were able to rehearse during class time and to record our sessions directly. It is also something new for our program.” The Drama Department has worked hard to bring something so different and new to life and hopes to see a large turnout in the coming days.

Tickets are now on sale through Broadway Direct and the broadcast will be available on Dec. 18-19. Be sure to tune in!
