Minarets Enjoys Homecoming Week Festivities Once Again After a Year of Cancelled Events

After the past year and a half of distance and hybrid learning, Minarets students have missed out on many of the fun events and traditions that Minarets has to offer. However, this year with school returning in person, Minarets students are grateful to be able to have sports games, events, rallies, etc. This week, students once again had the opportunity to enjoy some of the traditions and festivities of homecoming week. This included dress up themes for all five days and related lunch-time activities.

To kick off the week “Met Gala Monday”was celebrated, inspired by fancy met gala attire. Students came to school red-carpet-ready in dresses, suits, and other formal attire that were sure to make a fashion statement! At lunch, the best-dressed united to strut down the red carpet that was set up by the lunch tables. With the help of the crowd, students voted which group had the best red carpet walk.

Tuesday was “Time Travel Tuesday” where students time traveled and dressed from an era such as 60's hippies or 90's grunge. Others were inspired to dress for the imagined future or dressed up as their older selves. At lunch, students divided by grade level competed in a game of musical chairs featuring songs from different decades. On “Wake Up Wednesday”, students rolled out of bed and came to school in their pajamas. At lunch, there was an epic Tik-Tok dance-off. “Throwdown Thursday” had students dress as villains, enemies, rivalries, or their favorite sports team. There was a friendly competition at lunch with senior vs. sophomore and junior vs. freshmen dodgeball games. To finish out the week, students showed school spirit by wearing Minarets gear and their class colors. At lunch, students went head to head in a pie eating contest.

The homecoming week dress-up days and activities were a huge success. Minarets Leadership has been very grateful for the opportunity to put on the homecoming festivities once again. Leadership student Katelynn Mangan explains what it’s been like finally being back in person and being able to have homecoming week. Last year was a challenge for the leadership class because the assignments were mainly hosting events and activities, all of which were cancelled due to COVID-19 and distance learning.

“We’ve definitely had a lot of lunchtime activities which have been really fun for the students to get involved with,” Mangan says. “Especially from going from a year that has had absolutely no activities or anything to a year filled with fun and laughter and bringing everyone together. It’s nice to be a busy class [and have the opportunity to] get involved instead of sitting in the classroom hearing that another event got cancelled. It’s nice to actually take action and do the events again.”
