The National Honors Society (NHS) of Minarets is taking new applications!
The NHS at Minarets is extending its application deadline for new members to join. There are currently 12 members in the club, and English and Spanish teacher Michael Land, the head of NHS at the school, sees the society taking them far.
“National Honors Society is a group that recognizes excellence in four areas: scholarship, leadership, community, and service,” Land said. “NHS was founded on these four ‘pillars’ of the organization, to promote activity and service on campus for the people that want to help better their community.”
The National Honors Society exists to benefit the members in it, allowing them to serve their community and help around campus.
Land also said, “it certainly allows people to be in a community where they help people around them, but also offers an opportunity to win scholarships. It helps people achieve the academic experience colleges look for, and it looks good on a resume, so it definitely helps in that aspect.”
There are a few steps students will need to take if they wish to apply to the prestigious club.
“Students can join either in their senior, junior, or sophomore year in the form of a one-time application. They write out an essay on why they want to join the club and how they will fit in as a member, as well as why they believe they’re qualified. On top of that, they need to have two letters of recommendation from two of their teachers. As long as they have those and maintain a good academic standard and a GPA of 3.0 or higher while they’re a member, they can remain members until they graduate.”
The window for NHS applications to be submitted has been extended to the end of October.
