Speech and Debate is one of the newest clubs on campus, and those involved have already made a name for themselves through the several competitions that they have participated in. Mikendra McCoy, the adviser for the club, explained, "Speech and Debate is competitive oral communication as well as a national honor society. There are seventeen different events that deal with original writing, including theater acting, intellectual discussion and spar, and limited preparation communication." With her previous experience advising and coaching teams, McCoy has a passion for this program and sees its value for students. "Speech and Debate allow students to talk for themselves ... and so if we are training people to think and critically communicate, then they have to know how to present themselves … I want to hear what kids think ... this is the safe place for that," she said.
Due to COVID, students have not had the full experience of a Speech and Debate competition. McCoy explained, "There are uniforms and techniques and plans to learn correctly and accordingly.” On top of this, students typically are traveling to competitions, spending the full day there while also getting the opportunity to hear from celebrity guest speakers. Yet these challenges have not deterred the team. Sophomores Sophia Kennedy, Kat Haven, Samarie Duarte, Keana Hokama, Noah Sanchez, Janine Alven, and Maddie Phillips have been working diligently throughout the year to prepare for competitions. In fact, Kat Havens, Sophia Kennedy, and Samarie Duarte are going to State in April and Keana Hokama is headed to Nationals in June.
Sophomore Keana Hokama explained that she joined the club because it seemed to be an effective outlet for change and advocating what she was passionate about. With the assistance of McCoy, Hokama has multiple debate topics including advocating for heading towards plastic removal to help heal our Earth. Finally, she encourages any interested to check out the team: “Those interested should never be afraid to ask questions!... check it out, get a feel for the environment. The world of Speech and Debate is a stimulating mix of challenge, reward, and passion. More than that it's like a family. One that supports growth and prioritizes acceptance. All are always welcome.”
Speech and Debate is a team that doesn’t conform; it pushes the boundaries of learning and strives to help those willing to improve beyond competing. That is what makes Speech and Debate special in its uniqueness, and we are excited to have them on campus!
