Minarets FFA is the home chapter to one of the youngest, if not the youngest registered parliamentarian! Sophomore FFA Member Brayton Stenberg competed for Parliamentary Procedure at the National level last October! Stenberg is now a 15 year old coach, judge, and registered parliamentarian.

Stenberg has been doing Parliamentary Procedure for one year and has accomplished a great amount. He was part of the Novice Parliamentary Procedure State Champion Team in Spring 2019 and since his team was not able to attend the national contest Stenberg was selected to attend Nationals with the 2019 State Championship Advanced Team. The Advanced Parliamentary Procedure team consisted of all seniors who needed to attend Nationals to compete but with the team being freshman in college, this caused some difficulty. One of the members of the Advanced team could not make it to the national contest, so a substitute was chosen: freshman, going on sophomore at the time, Brayton Stenberg.

Kristi Mattes, Parliamentary Procedure Coach, said, “I chose Brayton because he meshed well with the team, personality wise, also I knew he would study hard and not let down the team.” Brayton did just that and did not let the team down. Stenberg tied for the highest score on the team for the test, only missing 2 out of the 50 questions. He got third in the entire contest, with only two other members getting a perfect score. He also was the only member of the advanced team who got all of his questions right for the round portion.

Judge Brayton Awarding Parli Pro Teams

Stenberg said, “In the past year I've spent a majority of my months studying and getting ready for contests for parli pro, as well as getting ready for the national contest which took a large toll on me. It was a lot of practicing and a lot of studying.” When Stenberg competed at the National Championships his eligibility was used up for his following years of high school. He now is currently serving as a coach for the Minarets teams, and judging at the contests that occur all across California. “Judging for the first time was a little bit stressful, something new I haven’t done before, but overall I’d say it is a good experience. Being able to see all the different kids come in and give their presentations in their rounds, it’s really enjoyable. I get to see all the different styles of parliamentary procedure.”

Stenberg is the youngest judge ever, and his hard work has paid off. Stenberg looks forward to the rest of the Parliamentary Procedure season teaching his peers.
