The Best Keep It Native Day A look behind the scenes of a celebrated day!

Chloe Tossetti

On April 18, 2024, in the heart of Minarets High School campus, hundreds of students, families, and members of the community came together for the eighth annual “Keep It Native Day”, a celebration of unity and Native American culture. This year’s KIND celebrations were led by seniors Felicia Keg, Anastasia Salazar, and Aiyana Bos as a part of their Senior Legacy Experience. The group brought together different tribes to help raise money for the Native Club. The gathering took place on the green grass lawn in front of the gym on a cool spring day. Booths lined up in a square-like formation for different vendors to sell and promote their business to help raise money. K-12th graders trickled their way in, getting to take part in the fun.

This Keep It Native Day was one for the books, getting a grant to spend $4,350 and then keeping the rest for the KIND club for the future. The group cooked delicious homemade tacos and served them to the community, raising over $700.  When it came to organizing, the amazing guidance of Ms. Camacho and Mrs. Witchcom served them well, offering valuable insight and paved the way for their successes. Empowering them to navigate the difficulties of communication and coordination when in need to put together such a big day for Minarets.

“This S.L.E was significant for me because it allowed me to represent my culture with my fellow Native peers, which I don't get to do often. I was allowed to meet so many Native community members and get in touch with my heritage, which was the best part,” Anastasia says, with pride.

After reflecting on the experience, Anastasia recalls the joy radiating from the K-12 students' faces as they immersed themselves in the fun activities and interactions relative to their heritage, like the dances and music of sorts. Amid the smiling faces, challenges loomed notably which was where teamwork played a part for all three of them. Negotiation with challenging individuals tested their resolving and problem-solving abilities, yet ultimately was resolved with everyone coming together to improve communication between different vendors and businesses.

Felicia recalls, “ My favorite part of planning was lining up time and figuring out the theme we were going for with shirts and posters.” In the midst of the stress, she reminds herself of the fun in it.

The day unfolded seamlessly, leaving an impression on those who gathered. Through their collective efforts, they not only showcased the richness of their culture but also showcased the importance of collaborating and realizing a shared vision in the community.
