The advanced drama class had its Dramatic Dessert event on Jan 29. The Dramatic Desserts event also gave an opportunity to the students going to New York to auction off baked goods that they made to go towards the trip. The event also gave the opportunity for exposure to the drama program. The night consisted of 13 performances of a wide variety.
Amazing scenes were performed;
'Emperor's New Groove' performed by Sophomore Kayla Velazquez, Sophomore Zane Pearce, and Sophomore John-Paul Uribe. A scene from Stranger things was, presented by Junior Molly Smith and Junior Cara Coombs. 'Soccer Moms', an original scene, was performed by Senior Maddie Wristen, Senior Emma Lynch, Senior Michael King, Junior Johanna Ziegler, and Sophomore Donovan Eniram. A scene from Friends, presented by Sophomore Hazel Taintor, Sophmore Laura Rohrbaugh, and Sophomore Isabella Romero. Sophomore Aubrey Ham performed a song from the play called Girl Crazy. Senior Michael King recited a monologue from the book and movie The Outsiders. The song Free from barbie the princess and the pauper was performed by Senior Emma Lynch and Junior Johanna Ziegler. The song 'Schuyler Sisters' from the musical Hamilton was sung by Sophomores Jolene Anderson, Kaya Velazquez, Elsa Crotty, and John-Paul Uribe. An excerpt called 'Never' from the book called Night was read by Junior Johanna Ziegler. Junior Hana Unruh performed stand up comedy by the comedian known as Fluffy. Sophomore Sebastion Vellandi read a poem called Awakening in New York by Maya Angelou. A monologue called 'And Turning, Stay' by Kellie Powell was read by Senior Maddie Wristen. Lastly a scene from Gilmore Girls was performed by Sophomores Diamond Bernstein and Carolyn Fay. Everyone did an excellent job!
We asked drama teacher Kayla West about how she thought the event went she said “I am very pleased with how the event went. Everyone rose to the occasion and did great”. The drama program also raised more money than West had anticipated which is great for the drama program.
We asked some of the performers what their favorite part of dramatic desserts was. Sophomore Jolene Anderson said, “By far my favorite part of dramatic desserts was the scene, 'Soccer Moms'”. Soccer moms was a scene written by a group of students in the advanced drama class, about soccer moms chatting with each other. Through fantastic acting, and witty writing, the performance was brought to life wonderfully. Overall the night was filled with desserts and fun scenes, full of comedy, acting skill, and joy!
